Why Allergy-Friendly Diners Avoid Restaurants … Until Now

On Friday, I spent the day walking between five independent restaurants in London, speaking to owners and managers about something often overlooked in hospitality: the experience of diners with dietary requirements.
At first, each conversation was met with curiosity, and a little scepticism.
But once we discussed what really stops people from dining out, especially those with allergies, Coeliac Disease, or specific diets, something shifted.

It clicked.

Dining Out with Dietary Restrictions: A Hidden Barrier

Imagine this: You’re planning dinner with friends. You are gluten-free or have a nut allergy. You check the restaurant’s website … and there’s no allergen menu in sight. Do you still go?
Most people with dietary needs won’t.
Not because they’re picky, but because the risk isn’t worth it.
Dining out with allergies or dietary restrictions often feels like gambling with your health. And when allergen information isn’t visible before arriving, that silence can feel like exclusion.
This is why so many coeliac or allergy-conscious diners stick to the few places they trust. Or worse, stop going out altogether.

The Moment That Changed Everything

One conversation stayed with me.
A restaurant manager listened closely as I explained how TasteBuddy helps users find allergy-friendly restaurants in the UK, with clear allergen information available before they even book.
She interrupted me; not to question it, but to thank me.
“I’ve been crying out for something like this,” she said. “I have dietary restrictions myself. It’s awkward. Embarrassing. I avoid eating out unless I really must. It’s a shame, I love food”
Then she did something incredible: she convinced her restaurant’s owner to come on board as a partner. Not because of a sales pitch - but because she knew the struggle first hand.

A Market Restaurants Can't Afford to Miss

Each of the five independent restaurants I spoke to realise the same thing:
They’re unintentionally excluding a growing market of allergy-aware diners.
That market is not small.

More than 25% of UK diners have some form of dietary requirement. But most of them aren’t making noise. They’re quietly opting out of the dining experience altogether.
Not because they want to, but because they don’t feel safe, welcome, or seen.

How TasteBuddy Is Changing the Game

TasteBuddy is the UK’s first dining discovery app built for people with food allergies, Coeliac Disease, or dietary preferences including Veganism. It helps users find safe dining options, see allergen menus in advance, and feel confident walking into new places, knowing their needs have already been considered.
We’re not promising clinical safety.
We’re creating visibility, inclusion, and trust before the customer ever steps through the door.
And restaurants who understand this? They’re not just avoiding risk.
They’re unlocking a new customer base.

Dining Should Feel Like a Welcome, not a Worry

This experience reminded me that many restaurants do care; they just haven’t been given the tools to show it.
TasteBuddy isn’t just another app.
It’s a movement toward inclusive, allergy-friendly dining across the UK - where people can explore, eat out, and enjoy food without fear.
